the challenge

Freshwater and Wastewater

Water is the topic of the 21st century!
You need freshwater to produce or ensure drinking water supply? For cooling tower applications or irrigation in agriculture? Do you have wastewater that needs to be disposed of? Does it still contain valuable materials that need to be recovered? Then you probably know – like the majority of Fortune 500 companies – that you are facing a challenging problem. And it grows every day: dwindling resources, increasing regulations. Please allow us to present the future of water treatment!

our technology

Forward Osmosis

Basics

Our award-winning technology is based on the principle of Forward Osmosis (FO) – not Reverse Osmosis (RO)! This is the fundamental principle of every living cell. As a result, you benefit from the advantages that nature has been utilizing for billions of years:

Advantages

✓ Half the energy consumption
✓ Excellent retention
✓ Outstanding robustness
✓ Virtually no fouling and scaling
✓ High reliability
✓ Consistent treatment quality
✓ Very easy operation
✓ Minimal maintenance
✓ Ideal for demanding applications

our core processes

A key feature includes two patented processes utilizing the principle of Forward Osmosis . Unlike any other membrane or filtration process, Ionosmosis can produce clean drinking water or utility water from raw water of almost any composition. This means that dissolved components (e.g., salt, sugar, and other ions) and undissolved components (e.g., oil, organic matter, and suspended solids) are almost entirely separated. In contrast, Osmodialysis enables the purification of saltwater, such as the clean separation of oil and seawater, in a continuous process.

the company

The Austrian company fluvicon GmbH was founded in 2013 in Leoben. It originated from a research project on water treatment using Forward Osmosis, funded by the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG). The spin-off was supported in its early stages by the Center for Applied Technology at Montanuniversität Leoben, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), and EIT Raw Materials. After the successful proof of concept, the first patent was filed in 2016. In 2017, fluvicon entered into a strategic development partnership with a medium-sized German plant developer, resulting in the creation of two demonstration plants. In 2018, fluvicon filed another patent. Revenues have so far been generated through successful feasibility studies and pilot projects for various pilot customers, as well as through the first commercial plant. fluvicon now possesses two practical, innovative technologies and specific expertise in water treatment and is preparing to take a broader step into the market.
The main shareholder, managing director, and head of the company is physicist Thomas Grießler. The fluvicon team currently consists of 12 employees at locations in Graz (Austria) and Frickenhausen (Germany), as well as a supervisory board comprising experts and strategic partners from business, industry, and innovation management.
